Tasting Note - Coliban Valley Merlot 2005

There are some pretty good Merlots coming out of the Heathcote region these days. They tend to be fairly heavy examples of this grape variety and would definitely appeal to the big red drinker. The Coliban Valley 2005 is only $20 which compares well to many of their neighbours who have hiked prices up in recent years. An opaque red (none of this lolly water Merlot in Heathcote) the wine displays fruity aromas mostly dark berries. Medium in body, it is quite mouth filling for a Merlot with plenty of fruit and dried herbs and negligible tannin. The length is impressive with a twiggy stalky character which off sets the sweet fruit well.
